World Sight Day

Luxottica is a company made of people, for people. Every day, the Group strives to construct a business where value creation and sustainable growth go hand in hand with a commitment to social responsibility at every stage of its vertically-integrated business model.

Its vision for sustainability, To See The Beauty of Life, stems from a notion of universal beauty, visible to everyone, and assumes a tangible form in the search for a balance between well-being, respect for the environment, ethics and the transparency of relations.

These values are well aligned with those of the World Sight Day, an annual day of awareness around vision impairment promoted by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in cooperation with the World Health Organization.

The theme of this year’s World Sight Day is “Hope in Sight”. To celebrate, Luxottica together with OneSight renewed its commitment with a vision care initiative for three consecutive years in the company’s home city of Milan.

Initiatives

YOUR EYES FIRST

With the Your Eyes First campaign, Luxottica's optical retail brands, including Salmoiraghi & Viganò in Italy, LensCrafters in North America and OPSM in Australia, will emphasize the importance of eye care over time by creating important art collaborations and illustrations on the subject. The illustrations will be applied to commonly used objects in the shops, from shopping bags to cleaning kits for glasses. The campaign’s first artist is Noma Bar, an Israeli illustrator who has collaborated with prestigious magazines and brands around the world.

ONESIGHT SWEAT
FOR SIGHT CHALLENGE

In Australia and New Zealand, the OneSight Sweat for Sight Challenge was launched to promote attention to health, physical and mental well-being among colleagues: those who participate commit to engage in twenty minutes of physical activity for twenty days, from dancing to walking outdoors, with the aim of raising donations for the organization.

LENSCRAFTERS CARES

Since July, LensCrafters has been collaborating with OneSight through the eight-week LensCrafters Cares program to support local communities most affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, providing complete eye exams and eyewear for those in need.

ONE SIGHT
IN SOUTH AFRICA

In South Africa, Luxottica and Essilor employees will collaborate with OneSight to organize a temporary clinic to help guests of an orphanage and the local community so that patients will be able to receive the glasses they need.

ESSILOR AND LUXOTTICA

In China, and for the first time, Essilor and Luxottica jointly launched a customer-facing fundraising campaign with 58 LensCrafters stores. By World Sight Day itself (October 8), it is expected that the campaign will have raised sufficient funds to provide free eye screening for more than 10,000 school age kids living in Chenduo County, in the Qinghai province.

Worldwide initiatives

There will be many opportunities for Luxottica employees to actively participate in the World Sight Day, starting with virtual sunglass sales among colleagues in North America that will benefit OneSight, and internal information campaigns in North America, Latin America, EMEA and China. In Dongguan, in particular, visual check-ups for employees and campaigns to raise awareness on the importance of UV and blue light protection will be organized.

Bonus Prevenzione
Salmoiraghi & Viganò

In Italy, all Salmoiraghi & Viganò customers who purchase a pair of prescription glasses will be refunded for the price of their visit to the eye doctor through the “Bonus Prevenzione” until November 1, 2020.

Discover the initiative

Under the patronage of the City of Milan, from October 7th-18th 2019, approximately 800 people in need had free access to a complete eye examination and, if necessary, eyeglasses to resolve their visual defect.

The initiative involved children and adults, Milanese and migrants, guests of some of Milan's most important charitable organizations, such as Casa “Enzo Jannacci” and Fondazione Progetto Arca Onlus, as well as Associazione CAF Onlus and Istituti Milanesi Martinitt e Stelline that deal with children in difficult circumstances.

Eye exams were carried out by highly qualified personnel, professional optometrists selected with the support of the COMIB Research Center of the Bicocca University of Milan supported by ophthalmologists who took care of diagnosing possible pathologies.

Luxottica employees participated as volunteers by donating their vacation days to facilitate activities, management of visits, and the distribution of glasses. This is the third year in a row Luxottica has partnered with OneSight on this initiative.

A day focused to improve the quality of sight (and life) of the most in need. A beautiful experience, where you realize you've really made the difference.

Francesca

During this experience, I certainly received more than I gave, because we helped people to see, but they helped me to watch.

A day full of "thanks", smiles and stories that make you understand how a simple pair of glasses can make the difference!

Andrea

Several things left me a strong impression: not only the comparison with realities so different from ours but at the same time much closer to us than we can imagine, but also the skills and professionalism shown by the medical staff. Flawless.

I am happy and grateful to have been able to devote some of my time to helping others: it reminded me how lucky we are and gave me a different way to face daily issues, also at work.

This experience enriched me by showing how a simple action can really make the difference for people who had never had access to an eye exam. I’m really proud of having contributed to this initiative!
